Study Tours

All tour participants will meet together in one location for a short introduction about immigration and Calgary, and the services available.

Study Tour 1 - Calgary Immigrant Services

Established in 1977 as the Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, over the past 30 years Calgary Immigrant Services has helped more than 250,000 immigrants settle in their new life and new home in Calgary. Visit CIS and hear about their programs which include: an immigrant language and vocational assessment referral centre, Canadian English language benchmark assessment for nurses, anti-racism & human rights outreach and a mosaic pre-school.

Study Tour 2 - Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre (part of the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society)

The Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre is a centre designed and built to provide initial settlement services to refugees and immigrants who may have special needs. The Centre has received much recognition and has been identified as having best practices for temporary accommodation and initial settlement services in Canada. Some of the services the Centre provides are: settlement services, temporary accommodation, transitional housing, medical clinic (initial health services for refugees), counselling and recreation.

Study Tour 3 - New Family Place (part of the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society)

On your tour of the New Family Place, you will discover a culmination of one of the first family resource centers in Canada. Opened in 2001, the New Family Place provides services to families in 23 different languages. It introduces a unique approach to supporting immigrant children and families through settlement and integration in Canada. Services provided are: licensed child care, toy lending library, collective kitchen, parenting classes, children's language development and a support program for high-need refugee and immigrant children.
